What happens at your first chiropractic appointment? Your first visit usually takes 30–40 minutes (allow up to an hour) and is mainly about understanding your problem. A GCC-registered chiropractor takes a full history, examines how you move, checks your joints, muscles and (where relevant) nerves, then explains what they think is going on and whether chiropractic care is suitable. Treatment only starts once you understand and agree to the plan.

Step by step
Your first appointment, step by step
- Before you arrive: book online and complete the short health questionnaire. Bring a list of any medication and any scan or test results you have.
- Case history (about 10–15 minutes): we ask where it hurts, how it started, what makes it better or worse, your general health, work, sport and goals.
- Examination: posture and movement checks, orthopaedic tests and, where relevant, neurological tests such as reflexes and sensation.
- Explanation: we tell you, in plain English, the likely cause, what we would recommend, the expected number of visits and the cost. If you need your GP or a scan first, we say so.
- Consent and treatment: if it is appropriate and you agree, treatment may start on the day. This can include spinal or joint manipulation, mobilisation, soft tissue work and exercises.
- Your plan: you leave with advice and exercises to do at home, and a clear idea of the next step.
Safety
Is it safe?
All chiropractors in the UK must be registered with the General Chiropractic Council and follow its code. Before any treatment we screen for warning signs that need medical care, explain the benefits and risks, and ask for your consent. Mild soreness for a day or two afterwards is the most common side effect.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
How long is a first chiropractic appointment?
At Ancoats Chiropractic Clinic the first appointment usually takes 30–40 minutes and covers your history, an examination and an explanation of findings. Allow up to an hour so nothing is rushed.
Will I be treated at my first appointment?
Often, if it is appropriate and you are happy to go ahead. If anything in your assessment suggests you need medical tests or a different kind of care first, we will tell you and hold off treatment.
What should I wear to a chiropractor?
Comfortable clothes you can move in, such as gym wear. We may ask you to bend, twist and walk so we can see how you move.
Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?
Most people feel little or no discomfort. Some feel mild soreness or stiffness for a day or two afterwards, similar to after exercise. We explain the benefits and risks before any treatment and use gentler techniques where needed.
Do I need a GP referral or an X-ray?
No. You can book directly, and most people do not need imaging. If your assessment suggests a scan is needed, we will explain why and refer you.
